JoAnna Garcia on Marriage: "It's About Meeting the Right Person"

We caught up with the lovely JoAnna Garcia to talk about her new ABC comedy, Better With You (debuting September 22nd) and her engagement to Yankees baseball player Nick Swisher.

Tell us about your new show Better With You.
The show is about two sisters at different stages of their romantic relationships. My older sister, Maddie (Jennifer Finnigan), is in a long term, slow moving relationship, and I play the younger sister, Mia, who’s a little more footloose and fancy free about my decisions. I meet a guy, fall in love, get knocked up and we get engaged—because that’s how normal life works, right? [Laughs] And then you have my parents, Joel (Kurt Fuller) and Vicky (Debra Jo Rupp)—which I believe are the cherry on top of the show, they’re so fantastic! They’ve been married forever, so you get to see the different realities of their relationship.

Your new show deals implicitly with the pressure on women to get married by a certain age. Do you see that as something that still happens to women in our society?
I dealt with it a lot in my life. Growing up and knowing that I came from a really tight knit family, I knew I wanted to be a wife and a mother—that was a huge priority for me. But life takes you on a journey and you have to make decisions and be free and be with the right person. It's so much more important to meet the right person, whether you’re married or not, then it is to get married and get a divorce.

You’ve done a lot of wedding-themed projects lately from Better With You to the ABC Family movie, Revenge of the Bridesmaids. Is that by plan or coincidence?
It’s a total coincidence! In fact, when I decided to do Better With You and Revenge of the Bridesmaids— that was before I was even engaged.
Is it hard to have a relationship when you’re working in L.A and your fiancé, Nick Swisher is in New York with the Yankees?
Having this relationship is the easiest thing I’ve ever done.  Somehow it just all works out. I live my dreams, he lives his dreams, and there’s always a way to make it work if you’re committed and want to do it. This is the most exciting time in our lives and we’re savoring every minute of it!
