Former Food Network star Juan-Carlos Cruz pleaded no contest to charges of soliciting two homeless men in Santa Monica, California to kill his girlfriend, Jennifer Campbell, People.com is reporting.
Cruz, 48, was arrested in May when the former pastry chef offered two homeless men $500 to murder his wife. Instead of killing Cruz's wife, the men thwarted his plans by telling police about the murder-for-hire plot. Police videotaped Cruz arranging the murder and showing one of the men how to gain access into the couple’s secure building. Campbell wasn’t hurt.
Cruz is best known for his role as the host of Calorie Commando, a healthy cooking show that taught viewers how to create alternative, low-calorie versions of comfort food.
The no contest plea, which is technically the same thing as a guilty plea, could land him behind bars for nine years in a state prison. His sentencing is set for Dec. 13.
According to TMZ, Cruz was just sentenced to nine years in prison.
