EXCLUSIVE: Actress Alana de la Garza on Her Pregnancy: "This is a Miracle!"

Mexican actress, Alana de la Garza, 34, who starred as A.D.A. Connie Rubriosa on the now-canceled Law & Order, spoke to Latina.com about how her pregnancy has changed her life, finding out the sex of her baby, and life after L & O.

Do you know the sex of your baby?

It’s a little boy! I had all of my in-laws in town when the nurse told me, so we all found out together! I didn’t have a preference on whether I wanted a boy or a girl—I’d love to have one of each. This is a miracle!

When are you due?

I’m actually due on October 11th, but he measured about two and a half weeks big. His dad is a big man too!

Have you picked out a name yet?

We have forever loved the name Axel, and it has suddenly become popular. So we’re like, ‘oh shoot, maybe we should change it?’ I keep waiting for a sign from God that says, ‘OK, this is your son’s name.’ [Laughs].

How has pregnancy changed your everyday life?

As an actress, you’re constantly striving to eat right, work out and take care of yourself to make sure that you fit into your wardrobe. With pregnancy, you have no control—your belly is just going to get bigger. So clothing is a challenge. It’s really funny because I had little pregnancy pants at the beginning of the pregnancy and then suddenly I went to pull them up and they were stabbing me in the stomach. [Laughs].

You and your husband, Michael Roberts, were married in 2008; but is it true that you were friends for years before you tied the knot?

We were friends for seven years and dated six more before we got married. My husband is my best friend and my biggest supporter no matter what I’m doing—whether I’m laying out by the pool or I’m playing Connie Rubirosa. It’s a wonderful relationship and a wonderful marriage.

Do you miss playing Connie on Law & Order?

Connie is much tougher than I am in real life, so I miss channeling her. We were actually supposed to be back just a couple of weeks ago, so I don’t think it’s quite hit me that the show is over yet. It’s really such a shame because when we all said goodbye at the end of last season, we didn’t realize we were really saying goodbye. We were told that it looked good for next season and so we thought we’d see each other later. When it came out that we were cancelled, everyone was a little bit shocked, like, ‘wait, a minute, I didn’t get to say goodbye to my family.’

Now that Law & Order is over, what’s next for you career-wise?

Right now I’m all about my little man. When he makes his debut, I’ll just pound the pavement like any other actor and try to get my next job!
