Breakups are never easy, and they can be especially challenging if you’re recovering from an eating disorder. This was the case for Demi Lovato, after her split with longtime bae and actor Wilmer Valderrama. In Lovato’s new YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated (which debuted on Oct. 17) she stands in her truth about what happened behind the scenes, ever since she sought treatment for the disease years ago.
Recently, she told Glamour: “The struggle is still very much there...What’s most important to me is that I just keep fighting, and I keep aiming for a goal of complete freedom. Even if that may not be possible, I’m going to aim for that goal.”
In Simply Complicated, Lovato is honest about what she's learned in the last decade. "I've learned that secrets make you sick. I'm learning how to be a voice and not a victim. I've learned that sex is natural. I've learned that love is necessary. Heartbreak is unavoidable, and loneliness is brutal. I've learned that the key to being happy is to tell your truth and be OK without all the answers."
And to show how far she’s come and her commitment to being healthy, the 25-year-old singer posted an Instagram Story on Wednesday (the same day the documentary dropped) with before and after photos of her journey. In the before image, the “Body Say” singer is extremely gaunt, but she left a clear message for girls and women who are struggling with the same issue: “recovery is possible.” Lovato, like most who’ve had eating disorder issues, knows that this is something they have to deal with for the rest of their lives.
And there are more reasons for Lovato to celebrate. In March, Lovato celebrated five years of sobriety. She became dependant on cocaine and Adderall as a teenager.
