Demi Lovato wants the world to know she's an open book, especially when it comes to issues of mental illness, self-harm, and personal struggles.

In a recent interview with E! News, the 21-year-old pop star talked about her struggles with mental illness and dished on the importance of open conversation. The actress and singer promoted her Clean and Clear See the Real Me campaign, designed to empower girls to embrace their true selves.

For Lovato, accepting her real self involved accepting her mental illness. "It's part of who I am," she said. "And you know, whether this campaign is about people having mental illness of not having one at all, I think that everyone can relate. And that covers people who are suffering from mental illnesses or people who are just struggling."

The star will join a range of experts on the upcoming Mental Health Listening and Engagement Tour. Through her struggles with substance abuse and mental illness, the star looked to those around her for support, guidance and love.

"It's important to have people around you that are going to be there for support in times like that," she admitted. "I look up to a lot of people around me, my best friends, family."

She also dished on the celebrity who inspires her to give it her all: Kelly Clarkson.

"She's just got an incredible voice," she gushed. "She's a Southern girl, you can hear it in her voice. She's awesome."

What do you think of Demi's "open book" policy & her celebrity inspiration?
