EXCLUSIVE: Dascha Polanco Talks 'Orange is the New Black' Season 3 & Body Issues

Nancy Ramirez

Last week we had the opportunity to attend Dominicans in the Myx, an intimate dinner event hosted by Sirius XM radio personality, Valerie Lora.  The dinner honored a handful of Dominican women, including Tahiry Jose, Lisa A. Ramos, Massiel "Mankofit" Arias, Claribel Almonte, Marcy Polanco, Nabila Tapia, and Orange is the New Black star Dascha Polanco.

We stopped Dascha on the red carpet to get the scoop on the upcoming season of OITNB, find out what it was like to film a sex scene, and more.

Read it all in our exclusive interview below:

Season 2 of Orange is the New Black was explosive so pretty much everyone knows that Daya is pregnant. What do we find her in season 3?

In season 3, there's more backstories. Daya will be there, and she's still pregnant, but that's all I can tell you.

What was it like filming those sex scenes?

A little intimidating because obviously — I’m not a size zero — so it was like, alright you’re going to have to accept it and do it.

As a plus-sized woman, you said that your size made you hesitate to audition and become an actor. How has playing Daya helped the perception of your body?

I think that the acknowledgment from fans and people in the industry and concentrating on my work has kind of guided my thoughts to my talent as opposed to how I look. It’s definitely helped me to love myself more.

What advice would you give to women struggling with their own body issues?

You have to learn how to love yourself. It has to come with that first choice of embracing what you think is so important, more than just pushing it away. It’s more about having a positive outlook on things.

Moving forward from OITNB, which actors or directors would you like to work with in Hollywood?

All of them! It’s hard to choose, but if I had to say, definitely Quentin Tarantino and [Martin] Scorsese.
