Benicio del Toro Takes on Role as Drama Teacher for Puerto Rican Inmates

Oscar-winning actor Benicio del Toro offered tips and encouragement to a group of jailed theater-lovers at a Puerto Rican prison on Monday.
The boricua actor interrupted his vacation on the Isla del Encanto for a talk at Bayamon Regional Prison just outside the island's capital of San Juan. Del Toro spoke to the inmates, emphasizing the importance of literacy to their rehabilitation, and explained how reading has been crucial to his own growth as an actor.
Some of the prisoners even had the opportunity to show off their own acting chops, performing a short sketch for Del Toro and their fellow inmates. “It's a great thing to be able to share with an artist who is famous, who has been making movies in Hollywood,” said Carlos Baez Figueroa, 39, who is currently serving a prison sentence for murder. The Che star took this visit very seriously and is a firm believer in second chances and rehabilitation. "I am here to help reaffirm that as long as there is life, you can still help society in some way. You can improve yourself," Del Toro said. As if the dreamy Del Toro needed to do anything to melt out hearts.
