We caught up with the adorable 17-year-old Mexicana to get the scoop on her performance, what she's planning to wear, her beauty must-haves, and more.
Check it all out in our exclusive interview below:
Tell us a bit about what you're planning on wearing to the VMAs?
I want to make sure I wear something that is high-fashion, but since this is also is my hometown of Inglewood, I want to be “Becky from the Block." My outfit will be urban, but still really girly.
How has your style evolved since you first stepped into the spotlight?
I feel like my style has evolved a lot! When I first started I was really young — 14 — and now that I am almost 18, I feel like I am a woman so I get to dress and express myself on a different level than I would when I was younger. And, you know, my lady curves are coming in and I am staring to appreciate them!
How would you describe your style?
My style is just another way of expressing myself besides music. I feel like I have this mix of tomboy yet girly side where I love wearing lots of jewelry but I also love a good sneaker heel and a cute dress. I really like mixing it up and doing a little bit of the unexpected.
You're performing at the VMA pre-party, what are you going to be singing? Are you nervous or excited?
I am super excited to be performing at the pre-party! I am going to be performing all of my songs and, since I am an #instaGLAM correspondent for the VMAs, I am doing a lot of “should I do this, or should I do that?” with my fans, letting them decide for me this time around. I asked them what Katy Perry song I should do a cover of, and they chose “California Gurls!" I am really, really excited for it — I have never performed it and I am a big fan of the song. It will be interesting when I sing it — especially including Snoop Dogg’s rap! Also, I am a California girl, which is why I thought it was so perfect.
Who's the one person you haven't worked with yet that you want to?
I love Shakira — she is such a beautiful person. She does so many good things for the world on top of making good music. And she is an awesome mom. When you are Latina, it is all about family, and to see that she prioritizes family and her career at the same time is really nice.
