Andy Garcia: Don't Call Me a Latino Actor

Getty Images

Andy Garcia, otherwise known as the quintessential old-school Cuban American, now says that when it comes to his career, he does not want to be identified as a Latino.

In an interview with Agencia EFE promoting his new movie, Pink Panther 2, the star explains his position. "The whole world knows that I love my culture and I've always said that I am Cuban, but I don't consider myself a Latino actor, nor do I want people to consider me or classify me in that way. One should classify all actors as equals."

Using an all-too-familiar argument, Garcia says that to identify him as a Latino actor is to uphold a double standard. "They don't say about Dustin Hoffman: he's a great Jewish American actor. I don't think that heritage has anything to do with acting, in realilty we are all actors. In my case I am an actor, American, with a Cuban heritage that gives me a sensibility or point of view that others probably don't have."

Hmm...sounds like Garcia is trying to have his identity politics cake and eat it, too. We see where his all-too-familiar thought process is headed, but who's to say that identifying an actor as Latino or otherwise is reinforcing some sort of inequality? Does the same criteria apply to other professions outside of acting?

What do you think about Andy Garcia's remarks?

I too agree with Mr. Garcia. I am a big fan of his work and although I must admit I fist got curious about him because he was born in Cuba, as I am, we both agree that this country gave him everything he now owns, including his education and his career. So, it would seem wrong to now categorize him as a Latino Actor. As he has said in the past, he is a Latino by birth, an actor by profession.
I am not Latina, but I do like Latin music and other things, "Latin." But I am troubled by how we in the US continue to put ourselves into little boxes like Latino, Cuban-American, Irish-American or any other think that is _______-American. We are never going to progress if we can't get past this self labeling. Why can't we just be people?
everyone know he's a cuban and a republican at that... So lets just call his what he is ..... white washed ...
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DUSTIN HOFFMAN MR. GARCIA IS THAT HE IS ACTUALLY A GREAT ACTOR, WHEREAS YOU ARE JUST A SO-SO ACTOR. IN ADDITION, HE HAS FANS FROM ALL ETHNICITIES AND RACES AND RELIGIONS BECAUSE OF HIS EXCELLENT LASTING WORKK, WHEREAS YOUR ONLY FANS RESIDE IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY. YOU ARE JUST NOT THAT GOOD. SO YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE KNOWN AS A LATINO ACTOR. CAPICHE?
Excuse me Traffic1, but Andy Garcia has been around for a long time, he's an excellent actor. He is not a so-so actor by any stretch of the imagination! Dustin Hoffman is a great actor, and so is Andy Garcia. Andy Garcia's fans do not just reside in the Latino community! That was a very untrue and ignorant statement to make! Andy Garcia is known all over the world as well. So, your sarcasm with the "capiche" thing was so over the top. So, Traffic1, the statement that you made, "so you will continue to be known as a Latino Actor"..... you make it out to be a bad thing!
Totally disagree. Andy Garcia is an actor, and he also is a Latino actor. It is possible - not to mention beautiful - to be both! He's also a father AND a Latino father, etc. And Polmexi8, we do actually categorize white actors when their cultural experience is relevant, especially with respect to British actors like Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren etc. I'm sure that Dustin Hoffman has been honored by the Jewish American community at some point or another, and we just don't know about it. Personally I think that heritage is just as if not more important to actors, because it has a major effect on casting choices and the roles that stars choose to take on themselves. I think it's silly for Andy Garcia to pretend otherwise.
I agree with Mr. Garcia. We say we are equal but we then catergorize people by heritage. We are becoming more devissive in this society. It took courage to express his opinion. Thanks for letting me have my say. TD :)
I agree with Andy 100%. Why should his heritage define him? It's one aspect of who he is as a human being. He is also a man, a father, a brother, a this, a that, and so on. So when it comes to his profession in Hollywood, he is simply an actor. Just like Denzel Washington, Dustin Hoffman, Jet Li and others are actors. We don't define 'White" actors as such. "Brad Pitt, a Caucasian actor...". Sounds weird, because we never hear it. Why should actors of color be called out by it? An actor is an actor!
I hope his mami, tia, or somebody knocks some sense into him. (literally or figuratively). I understand what he means but he should be proud that he is a great Latino actor, just Like Dustan Hoffman should be proud he is a great Jewish actor and not worried about saying it out loud. I love this guy I guess it was just a shock to see that comment after so many years of loving his work.
