We absolutely love watching Andrea Navedo star as Xiomara, the free-spirited fun-loving mami of the straight-laced Jane Gloriana Villanueva (played by Gina Rodriguez) on Jane the Virgin week after week. But there's so much more to Navedo than just the spirit of one ensemble character. The dynamic actress will take the stage in New York City this summer in a brand new play, Other People's Money. As a Bronx native, Navedo has a very special place in her heart for the project.
Navedo spoke with us about Other People's Money, and proceeds from the show's Indigogo campaign benefit the Fresh Air Fund, an organization that sends inner city children to summer camp. "When I was 12 years old, I was a Fresh Air kid myself," she shared. "I had the most amazing experience. My parents couldn’t afford to send me to camp, but I went for two weeks. In my entire childhood I only had two weeks of camp. It was one of the most amazing times I’ve ever had. I decided to produce the play because I wanted to go back to my acting roots in theater. But I also wanted to take the opportunity to benefit others and pay it forward. Other People’s Money will run July 29 through August 14 and you’ll get to see a completely different side of Xiomara."
We cannot wait to check out Navedo live, but of course, we had to learn more about what's in store for our Xo and the Villanuevas on the new season of Jane the Virgin! And one tidbit is a real bombshell— Jane is losing her virginity! “I was surprised when I heard that," Navedo laughed. "But I was kind of relieved. Finally, enjoy yourself, woman!”
Jane's mami has no problems enjoying herself — it's just one of the things we love about her. Navedo says she's more conservative than her Jane character, but she empowers Xo with her abuela's vivacity. “I liken my character to Xiomara to my 93-year-old grandmother. She was always the life of the party. I remember my grandmother with the straw hat that said Puerto Rico and a Budweiser can in one hand. She was the one who told me at five years old, at one of our salsa family parties, 'Mira, Andrea, you have to shake your hips, because you are a girl and you have to be sexy!' She’s still seriously like that at 93!”
It's also safe to say that abuelita would also be a fan of Rodriguez's bold new hairstyles, and Navedo also loves that her co-star is taking some bold and beautiful style risks. “I love the shaved head," Navedo raved."I remember having a conversation with Gina right at the end of season two of our filming. The very next day she was going to get her head shaved for the role that she's playing, and she was nervous about it. I told her not to be nervous and go for it. Latina women are always seen as beautiful and sexy, always one note. Break that mold. Go against what people are expecting to see. It’s going to make a difference in her career. I truly believe it will."
We can't wait until the third season of Jane the Virgin premieres on the CW this fall. And if you're visiting New York City, don't miss Navedo in Other People's Money, from July 29 through August 14. Purchase tickets at the actingstudio.com/tix.
