Can you talk to us a little bit about your character, Laz Delgado.
Laz is a guy from the streets who became a cop and left the police force after a while and got into the entertainment business. The part of the business that he got into was concert promotions and sort of protection/security. He is the guy that you go to if you want to put on a show and also make sure that no one else is in your pockets regarding that show. Laz is not afraid to get scrappy so Cookie is putting together her Lion dynasty to challenge the Empire and she needs a little help. She needs little muscle and a little guidance in terms of putting on some of these shows to promote the label. She interviews a few people, Laz being one of them, and Laz makes a pitch to her and in that moment she realizes he is what she is looking for in more ways than one.
How is this role different for you from all of your other roles?
I feel like Laz has a bit more of a street edge than other characters that I have played in recent times. I think Laz is definitely somebody that is comfortable with dealing with the underbelly of the music business and the streets, for that matter. I think that works well in the world of Empire. I think Laz is somebody that is not afraid to go up against somebody like a Lucious Lyon or any of the people he might send Laz’s way. I think Cookie sees that and she realizes that he is for real and this is the type of person that I need to have by my side while I am building this business. It might also be the type of person that she might like to have by her side in other aspects of her life.
What kind of other aspects of her life?
I think in her personal life. I think that there is an attraction between the two of them that ends up leading somewhere and that somewhere might be to love; it might be in the bedroom or might be to both. There is a definite chemistry going on between the two of them, for sure!
What has it been like for you working with Taraji P. Henson?
She is one of my favorite people to work with. I love hanging out with her and I love being in scenes with her because she is so electric. She is in it! She really embodies the characters that she plays. It just makes the work so much fun because it is always elevated beyond the page so you have to be ready to adlip and you have to be ready to play. That is the part of my job that I love the most! I know when I am going to work with Taraji that it is going to be fun playing. Not to mention that she is one of the sweetest people I know. We did a movie together a few years for Tyler Perry and we have maintained a good friendship ever since. She is special! Just being on
What about being on the set of Empire?
Just being on the set of the biggest show on television right now, everybody is loose, having fun and enjoying this moment that they are having and overall just doing great work. I think that it is going to sustain the strength of the show for hopefully a lot of seasons to come. They are really enjoying themselves on Empire and I think that is a sign for success. When you start to get to precious with things or you worry about what’s not working you start to loose the magic and they are doing a great job at maintain that magical feeling. I think the show has a long life ahead of it.
Why was it important for you to take this role?
I think first and fore most is if it something that I am going to be interested in and I will enjoy. With Empire having been on a season already, I had watched the show and become a fan. It was a world that I was enjoying watching and because of that I naturally wanted to participate in it. That was one of the reasons that I wanted to take the job and knowing that Taraji was going to be the person that I was going to be with in most of my scenes was another reason. We have a great friendship and I knew I was going to enjoy the time I was going to spend there. I really liked what Laz Delgado was about. I liked that there was this strong man coming in there to be something strong for Cookie that no one else has been. Lucious hasn’t been, that none of her sons have been up to this point. He is someone that was willing to come in and actually fight for Cookie and not fight against and not try to take advantage of her. I love the idea of actually finding her sweet spot and finding that place of vulnerability where she was willing to let her guard down and just be herself. I thought that that was a special thing about playing this character. I really enjoyed that part of the work.
