Whether they acquired them during childhood or later in life, nicknames always say a lot about a person. When it comes to celebrities, it's more often than not that we know them by their stage names and not what's actually on their birth certificates. So how exactly did their nicknames come about? Find out below!
1. Nicknames: Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez aka JLo
Believe it or not, we have been calling Jennifer Lopez by JLo since 1999. The Boricua pop star’s nickname started thanks to her infamous ex, P. Diddy. JLo also became the title to her second studio album, which garnered hits like, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “I’m Real.”
At least the nickname lasted longer than the relationship…
2. Nicknames: Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera aka Xtina
The Grammy-winning singer has several nicknames including, Chrissy, Candy, and Baby Jane, but the most famous out of all of them is Xtina. The R-rated name was created during the same year her Stripped album dropped.
3. Nicknames: Fergie
Stacy Ferguson aka Fergie
Once the pop star joined the Black Eyed Peas in 2004, her name was dramatically shortened and highlighted her cooler sounding last name. It didn’t take long before we fell in love with her “Lady Lumps” and also started calling her The Duchess.
4. Nicknames: Cheech Marin
Cheech Marin aka Cheech
The famous comedian’s nickname stands for chicharron, or pork fritter aka fried pork skin. (Insert munchies pun here.)
5. Nicknames: Daddy Yankee
Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez aka Daddy Yankee
He’s known for many stage names including El Cangri, The Big Boss, and of course, Daddy Yankee. The Puerto Rican reggaetonero’s name is slang for a ‘big shot’ in the game. Well, we think that’s pretty fitting.
6. Nicknames: Pitbull
Armando Cristian Pérez aka Pitbull
The Cuban rapper wanted a name that would highlight that he is a force to be reckoned with. He succeeded. In an interview with a radio station, he explained the idea behind his stage name. “They bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they’re outlawed in Dade County. They’re basically everything that I am. It’s been a constant fight,” he said.
7. Nicknames: Fat Joe
Joseph Antonio Cartagena aka Fat Joe
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but during the rapper’s recent visit to the Chelsea Lately Show he explained the details behind his other nickname, Joey Crack. “The truth is that since I was young I was overweight, and my pants would sag so the crack of my ass would show.” Nice one!
8. Nicknames: Taboo
Jaime Luis Gómez aka Taboo
The Black Eyed Peas rapper says his stage name is all about the lifestyle he leads. “My son, Josh's mom is Black, and where I grew up it was frowned upon to date outside your race so it was kind've a taboo for a Mexican to be dealing with an African-American woman,” he said in an interview. He also added that the name also reflects part of his personality. We are glad he didn’t follow the rest of the pack!
9. Nicknames: Calle 13
René Pérez Joglar and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez aka Calle 13 (Residente & Visitante)
The half-brothers came up with their creative names based on their childhood experiences. Eduardo lived in a gated community in Trujillo Alto in Puerto Rico. In order to enter the premise, you had to identify whether you were a visitor or a resident. In addition, the duo paid tribute to their old neighborhood by naming themselves after the street they grew up on.
10. Nicknames: Juanes
Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez aka Juanes
The Colombian singer’s stage name is a combination of his first and middle name. Pretty creative, no?
