Disney has been known to create a Latina star or two (we’re talking to you Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato) and now the Mickey Mouse channel is ready to create a third one: 13-year-old, Bella Thorne.
Thorne, who’s part-Cuban, is being groomed to become the next Miley Cyrus for the Disney Channel. The freckle-faced tween is the star of the new Disney Channel hit, Shake It Up, which premiered on Sunday, November 7 as the number one Sunday series debut ever in all target demos for the Disney channel.
Shake It Up, is sort of like a combination of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Hairspray. It follows two best friends, Cece Jones (Thorne) and Raquel “Rocky” Blue (Zendaya Coleman) who become backup dancers on a popular teen dance show called, Shake It Up, Chicago. Thorne’s character Cece has fostered showbiz aspirations from the time she could walk.
Before landing her first major starring role on television with Shake It Up, Thorne had a recurring role as Bill Paxton’s daughter, Tancy ‘Teeny’ Henrickson on HBO’s provocative hit drama, Big Love. She also guest starred on Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place as Max’s (Jake T. Austin) girlfriend, Nancy.
Like fellow Latina Selena Gomez, Thorne is a jack-of-all-trades. In addition to acting, she’s also done quite a bit of modeling, appearing in print ads for Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Lauren. During her free time, she helps those in need through her personal charity, The Nomad Organization, which works to provide aid to children in Africa.
