In Stephen Colbert’s “Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger” segment on his hit political satire commentary show The Colbert Report, he brought up the term “anchor baby” and read the definition as written in the American Heritage Dictionary which he says is, “accurately defined as ‘a child born to a non-citizen mother in a country that grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil, especially such a child born to parents seeking to secure eventual citizenship.’”
He claims that the Immigration Policy Center complained about the definition in that particular dictionary and the definition was changed to, “Offensive…Used as a disparaging term.
Colbert went on to say there is nothing wrong with the term “anchor baby” and then read a quote from immigration opponent Bob Dane, which read, “what’s offensive about ‘anchor baby’ isn’t the term, but the practice of having a baby on our soil to game the system.”
He finished by saying, “Folks, if you don’t think this is happening, you’re living in a dream world.”
