WATCH: Demi Lovato Opens Up About "Self-Medicating" & Becoming a Role Model

In an appearance on Ellen yesterday, Demi Lovato opened up about her past eating disorders, self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, and her history of being bullied. The 19-year-old part-Mexican singer/actress, whose new album Unbroken is available on iTunes now, spoke candidly about her past year with Ellen DeGeneres.

Demi Lovato Declares Herself “Unbroken”

Lovato admitted to suffering from both anorexia nervosa and bulimia and also said she was bullied in school, which helped contribute to her cutting behavior. “So many things were said to me that just haunted me every day and I went from having all these friends to none,” Lovato said. When asked by DeGeneres if she had ever tried drugs or alcohol, Lovato admitted to trying to "self-medicate" in attempt to drown out her anxiety.

Lovato confessed that she once looked up to thin women on the covers of magazines. “That’s what I had to idolize—I don’t want that for young girls to idolize,” she said. “There needs to be a role model out there and for the first time in my life I actually feel like one.”
