Forbes has unleashed its weighty list of “The World’s Most Powerful Women 2013” and we were not at all surprised to see some Latina representation there, making their presence known.
The list, compiled annually by the business magazine, features women with the most impact, including top politicians, CEOs, billionaires and celebrities who have their own stamp on the globe,
Below are the most powerful Latinas in this mighty list:
Position on The List: 2
The current president of Brazil came in at second for world’s most powerful women – pretty impressive. The 65-year-old leads the world’s seventh-largest national economy, which boasts as GDP of $2.4 trillion and, according to Forbes, Rouseff’s emphasis on entrepreneurship has encouraged a new generation of startups to crop up in the South American country.
Maria das Graças Silva Foster
Position on The List: 18
Maria das Graças Silva Foster (who holds a few Master’s degrees and is a brilliant mujer in our book) came in at 18th place on Forbes’ list. She oversees the state-controlled big oil company Petrobas, which is the largest company in the Southern hemisphere by sales ($144 billion). That’s a lot of money on her hands – and a lot of responsibility.
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner
Position on The List: 26
Argentina’s first elected female president ranked 26th on Forbes’ list. A native of La Plata, Buenos Aires, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has a lot on her plate as Argentina’s leader – including but not limited to accusations that the country has covered up runaway inflation by underreporting the country’s annual rate and the long-standing Falklands conflict. Kirchner just celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the government she and her late husband Nestor Kirchner launched back in 2003. Last year, the argentina ranked 16th on the list.
Position on The List: 38
The stunning Sofia Vergara is not just an actress. The Modern Family star (and top-earning actress on television) is also being pegged by Forbes as the face of a “sweeping (and lucrative) trend to capture the $1 trillion Hispanic market.” Besides her on-screen gigs, the colombiana stays busy juggling multiple business deals, including her Kmart clothing/home goods line and endorsement deals with Diet Pepsi, CoverGirl, Rooms to Go and even thyroid medicine Synthroid. Vergara’s endearing accent of hers – and, of course, keen eye for business – will surely keep her on this list for years to come.
Position on This List: 52
Shakira has kept the world under her hypnotizing (and hip-shaking) spell for years with her music, and this year was no different after the international superstar appeared as a new coach on NBC's The Voice. Her gig helped increase ratings on the singing competition show. But Shakira is more than a music fixture – she’s a humanitarian with a great heart who also serves as a UNICEF ambassador and founder of her beloved Barefoot Foundation, which she established back in 1996. And who could forget that amazing world baby shower she and boyfriend Gerard Piqué held right before their baby Milan was born this past January? That was probably the most attended baby shower in the history of baby showers. For all this, Shakira ranked at 52 on Forbes' list.
Position on The List: 66
The Spanish businesswoman/entrepreneur is the wealthiest self-made woman on the planet – partly due to her Inditex’s value shooting up this past year. Inditex is the fashion retailer (best known for its Zara brand) the 69-year-old co-founded with her ex-husband Amancio Ortega. Mera is also a big-time investor, having dipped her hands in everything from a marine fishing farming group to London’s exclusive Bulgari Hotel. Not bad for someone who dropped out of school at the tender age of 11. Mera ranked 66th on Forbes' list.
Position on The List: 95
The Brazilian bombshell model (and mommy) is no doubt one of the world's most powerful supermodels. She has a slew of brands she endorses, such as Chanel and David Yurman. If that doesn’t keep her busy enough, Bündchen is also involved with independent d independent ventures like her Sejaa skincare line and makes time to give back with roles such as ambassador for the U.N. Environmental Program.
