Though the timing of Shakira and Gerard Piqué's breakups may seem suspicious, reports of them "making out" in Spain are apparently false.
In August of 2010, Shakira was snapped exiting the same Barcelona hotel as the popular Spanish football star, who apparently was not registered for a room. Local tabloids reported that the duo had spent two nights together. When confronted about the rumors, Shakira told press, "It’s funny how the newspapers want to see you married, and then see you divorced. Well, I won’t make any of them." They met when Piqué appeared in the music video for Shakira's World Cup anthem, "Waka, Waka."
We believed Shaki until the two were reportedly spotted again in November 2010 in the Spanish resort town of Blanes. But now, the Spanish reporter who claimed he saw them and went on the TV show Onda Cero saying, "Shakira's tongue was inside Pique's mouth and it felt like it would go out his ear," is apologizing for falsifying his story.
"It's a huge mistake," admitted Spanish journalist and anchor Javier Sardá. "First of all, I didn't realize this news would transcend so much. Number two, people can do whatever they want in a restaurant without having to worry about a journalist peeping around and telling the world about it. Number three, one thing is how you tell the story to your friends in a fun, informal context, and another is to read the graphic comment about the tongue written everywhere. That further proves it was a mistake to talk about it."
Sardá even admitted that he never saw the pair kiss, but heard the story from a trusted source. "As all sources, it may be false," said the journalist. "I understand my duty as a journalist and because I had never intended to cause distress to others, I must apologize to Piqué and Shakira categorically and openly."
Gerard Piqué has vehemently denied the romantic speculation, telling reporters in the Barcelona airport: "We're just friends. There's nothing more to it. I don't know anything about the break-up. You all have just told me about it. We're just friends and that's that."
