Sofia Vergara Defends Modern Family Character

ABC

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara has become known for her ditzy but loveable character, Gloria, but many are not pleased with her representation of Latino culture. The Colombiana recently spoke out to defend her character and discuss Latina stereotypes.

“Whoever said that all Latin women are the same? It’s impossible to caricature millions of women from 20 countries. There are many kinds of Latinas, just like there are many types and styles of women all over the world,” she told EFE.

Gloria’s sexualized and ditzy behavior has been criticized in the past for perpetuating an “ignorant” and “borderline rude” perception of Latinas in the United States.
