Our hopes for the wedding of the century have officially been dashed. Salma Hayek and her fiancé, French billionaire and fashion industry tycoon Francois-Henri Pinault, have called off their engagement. "We are sad to announce the engagement of Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault has been canceled," Salma's rep said in a statement to USA Today. "There will be no further comment."
Salma met Francois, the father of her 10-month-old daughter Valentina Paloma, in Venice two years ago, and created her own rules of courtship by first getting pregnant, then announcing her engagement to the billionaire, and ultimately revealing that she didn't feel the "need" to get married at all. "Do I think we are going to get married? Probably. Will it make a difference? I hope not," she told Glamour magazine.
The couple's relationship hit the rocks last year when rumors spread
that Francois had fathered model Linda Evangelista's baby—while he was
dating Salma. The allegations fizzled, many say because Francois
influential position in the fashion world meant most editors wouldn't
print negative stories about him.
"You want to grow old with someone, you want to have a partner and to have children—we have all those things," Salma said earlier this year. "Some people need the commitment. Maybe we'll just make the party!"
Now that the party's over, we wonder if Salma will be able to maintain the haute couture lifestyle she became accustomed to with Francois, or if she'll have to return to the the droll life of an average multimillionaire...
