When Ricky Martin first came on the music scene as a member of the Latino boy band, Menudo, he was 12. Or was he?
During an interview with Ellen Degeneres (airing Thursday at 4 p.m.), the Puerto Rican singer revealed that he lied about his age to join Menudo.
"When I was 12 years old I started in the music business and my manager told me, 'I want you to say you’re 11 years old, so you can stay longer in the band,' " Ricky said.
Ricky, who was there to promote his new memoir, said it’s important for him to come clean about the lies of his past, especially after coming clean about his new sexuality. "Ever since I came out and I’m doing interviews about my book, Me, I feel so free because I am literally, for the first time in my life, not manipulating information."
Martin, who kept the secret that he was a gay man for 38 years, said he got used to lying at an early age. "It was, 'Hi, I'm Ricky, it’s nice to meet you and I'm 11 years old. I was already lying,' " he said.
