Empire's Rafael de la Fuente Says Playing a Gay Character is “Necessary and Important”

Rafael de la Fuente is “very proud” of his role on Empire.

The Venezuelan actor chatted with PEOPLE on how blessed he feels to play Micheal Sanchez on the hit show, especially because he represents a small amount of minority gay characters currently on T.V.

"It's been amazing because we've gotten so many tweets and messages on Instagram and emails from fans that are so grateful that we are giving face to these characters and just putting it out there,” de la Fuente told PEOPLE. "It's necessary and important.”

The actor also dished some details about season 3, in which he says, "It's Empire, so it's going to be good,” and the camaraderie he feels on set with the cast.

"My coworkers – my friends I've made on the show – they're amazing," he says. "It's such a good set. Everyone is just extremely talented but also really humble, and I just love everyone. It's been a very nurturing show to be a part of."
