Known as the largest parade in New York City, the Puerto Rican Day Parade attracts over two million spectators a year and transforms the city streets into an epicenter of island pride. Colorful flags will adorn Fifth Avenue and 44th Street all the way up until 79th Street this Sunday, June 10th. We are celebrating by taking a look at our favorite celebs that have showcased their Boricua pride at past parades. They makes us all say, que bonita bandera...
1. PR Parade: Ricky Martin
In 2007, Ricky Martin made countless of fans proud as the "King of the Parade" at the 50th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. The Grammy-winning star was spotted waving his bandera with pride. What a way to be "Livin’ La Vida Loca"!
2. PR Parade: Jennifer Lopez / Marc Anthony
Before their split, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were the official king and queen of the Puerto Rican Day Parade back in 2010. The former Boricua power couple were also riding like royalty in a chauffeured convertible. Yep, they came a long way from the 6 train!
3. PR Parade: Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez's Puerto Rican heritage inspired her 2006 documentary titled, Yo soy Boricua, pa'que tu lo sepas!, where she depicts the differences between U.S. born and island born Puerto Ricans. The actress marched along with spectators and gave props to her community. Wepa!
4. PR Parade: Jimmy Smits
In 2006, Jimmy Smits, who was starring on the West Wing, showcased his pride while riding on a parade float. He may have been raised in Brooklyn, but Jimmy kept his strong ties to the Puerto Rican culture. Five years earlier, he protested against U.S. Navy bombing practices in Vieques. Now that deserves a cheer!
