Puerto Rican Cardinal Asks Ricky Martin Not to Promote Homosexuality

Luis Aponte Martínez, Archbishop Emeritus of San Juan de Puerto Rico, has officially asked Ricky Martin to not promote homosexuality.  “I beg him, for the love of his children (for whom I imagine he wants the best), that he [Ricky Martin] try to set an example of the great values we all share to our youth – especially in regards to sex,” said the Cardinal.

Martinez admitted that he has admired the singer for his musical accomplishments but he would like Martin to serve as a role model for Puerto Rican youth.  “That’s how he would be thanking God for the great qualities he has been given,” the religious figure said.  Martinez stressed that he didn’t want his words to cause a controversial argument nor attack his famous compatriot.

This is not the first time that Martin has been targeted by the church. Before the first concert in San Juan for his MAS tour, a local pastor staged protests and accused him of promoting the homosexual lifestyle. Thousands of people and activists have disagreed fiercely with the Cardinal, arguing that Martinez is promoting intolerance.
