Oscar De La Hoya Says Alcoholism is a Battle He Fights "Every Day"

The former world champion, who won 10 world titles in six divisions, is one of the most admired Latino sports heroes. And although his net value is estimated at $175 million, his life is far from glamorous.

"The fight life, that was easy," he says. "This is a battle I have every day. There I was, the Golden Boy, and all the time, I felt like crap."

In 2011, things really spun out of control and he even thought about committing suicide. “There were drugs,” he said during an interview that year. “My drug of choice was cocaine and alcohol."

De La Hoya continued, “But I depended more on the alcohol than the cocaine. It took me to a place where I felt safe. It took me to a place where I felt as if nobody can say anything to me. It took me to a place where I just can reach out and grab my mom."

But the 40-year-old is in a very different place now.

"I am very proud of myself," he says. "Before, I may have talked tough, but I never had this kind of courage, strength, hope."
