Nicole Richie Reveals the Hardest Part About Being Married

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden married three years ago -- but they admit their relationship still takes work.

In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Richie discussed parenthood, marriage, and her former best friend, Paris Hilton.

On the July 27 episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Richie told Winfrey about the best -- and worst -- parts of being married to the Good Charlotte rocker. "We met and were partners from day one. And from the second we found out we were going to be parents together, we looked at each other and we said, "Okay, both of our parents are divorced. We both have had ups and downs with our parents and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is," she said. "But, we're recognizing that now, so let's work at it and let's go through this together as a team. It's been great. I would say that's the easiest and hardest part."

The couple have two children together: a six-year-old daughter, Harlow, and four-year-old son, Sparrow. When it comes to parenthood, Nicole admits there will always be room for improvement. She said that she talks with other moms to figure out how to have a strong relationship with her children.

"I have to always come from a place of love and compassion with them," she said. "My kids operate best when I let them have a voice. I really explain things to them, because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They just want you to be truthful."
