New updates in the Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon divorce saga indicate that Carey's mental health may have provoked their shocking breakup.

According to TMZ, Cannon left Carey — and not the other way around. Sources told the site that Cannon ended the marriage because he believes his estranged wife inflicts emotional trauma upon their children, 3-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

Cannon reportedly decided to leave Carey because he wants to create an environment separate from her that gives the kids a "safe haven" from the "chaos" of her home. However, New York Daily News reports that Carey will be taking the twins with her on tour beginning in October.

The 33-year-old entrepreneur apparently expressed concern over the mental health of the diva. He told friends that he believes her people don't care about anything but her ability to make money.

TMZ also states that Cannon decided to take on a "passive" role in the divorce, and has instructed his lawyers to take the path of least resistance to end things peacefully.

Carey, 44, and Cannon, 33, married in a romantic, secret ceremony in the Bahamas in 2008. The lovebirds appeared to be in it for the long haul, especially after they received matching tattoos bearing each other's names.

Last week, news broke that the couple had been separated for several months, and had reportedly nearly finalized their divorce proceedings. Cannon confirmed that he and Carey had been living in separate houses for several months.
