Like Tyler, Guetta, the French crossover EDM artist, took to racial stereotypes to highlight his, ahem, creativity. In his new video for “Play Hard,” featuring Ne-Yo and Akon, the French born DJ employs almost every Mexican stereotype in the book—tatted cholos, a dancing hoochie mama, faux drug deals, over-sexualized pageant queens, an abuela wearing a luchador mask, big cowboy hats and pointy boots. Hey, Guetta you missed the Mexican jumping beans, coke-sniffing dealers, border jumpers and dramatic telenovela actors.

When the Mexican DJs of 3BallMTY feature a pointy boot dance off in the video for their hit single "Intentalo," it’s an homage to their culture; when a French DJ adds it to a montage of stereotypical images, it’s misguided and hurtful. Perhaps, 3BallMTY should do a remix video for “Play Hard” featuring French stereotypes — mimes, baguettes, snotty waiters and loose maids. They wouldn’t, though, because they would alienate their French fans. Clearly, Guetta doesn’t mind losing a few Latino ones.
