Lionel Richie: Surviving Nicole Was a "Struggle-and-a-Half"

Legendary singer Lionel Richie thinks he deserves praise not for lasting four decades in the music industry, but rather for surviving half that time as father to reformed wild child Nicole Richie. The crooner told press at the TV Land Awards this past weekend (where he won the Icon award), ''Forget about surviving 40 years in the music business. Just surviving 27 years of Nicole Richie has been a struggle-and-a-half, I want to tell you. I stand here as a survivor, I want you to know, for all the parents out there.''

He went on to say that his daughter has not only turned over a new leaf, but is bordering on paranoid about the health and safety of her new family, especially her own daughter Harlow Kate Winter Madden: "She went from, 'Dad, I don’t care. Whatever you say.' to 'Wash your hands, dad.' and 'Be quiet, dad,' " he says. "It's a whole new sound of the house."

While we're getting a little tired of saintly, boring Nicole, we'll certainly take her low-pro style over her drugs-doing, DUI-getting days. Just don't forget to shake things up once in a while, Nic—maybe by saying something scandalous about your best frenemy?
