Pretty soon, J.R. Martinez will have an even better prize in his arms than his Dancing with the Stars trophy!
People is reporting that the DWTS champ is expecting his first child with girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones. In an interview with the magazine, the part-Salvadorian Army veteran-turned actor said he and Gonzalez-Jones found out the sex of the baby last week.
It’s a girl! 28-year-old Martinez said he and his girlfriend are “over the moon.”
“Diana has a little baby bump now and it's the cutest thing ever,” he gushed. “With the holidays coming up, this is the biggest and best gift we could get.
Martinez and Gonzalez-Jones reportedly met on the set of ABC’s All My Children, which Martinez starred in as Brot Monroe, also a U.S. Army veteran. Gonzalez-Jones was an assistant to the soap opera’s executive producer and she and Martinez became close friends. According to People, it was not until last year that they decided to take it further than a friendship.
“We were so good as friends that romantically, we just clicked right away,” Gonzalez-Jones said. “There was no adjustment period.”
As for his upcoming life as a new father, Martinez said it’s “sinking in.” He added that he couldn’t believe all the good things that have happened in the past year. And there is plenty. His positive spirit and amazing story of survival won over many hearts this year. During a deployment in 2003, Martinez was driving a Humvee that hit a landmine. His fellow soldiers were thrown from the vehicle from the impact of the explosion, but Martinez remained trapped inside, suffering burns that covered 40 percent of his body. During recovery, he had to go through more than 30 surgeries and physical therapy.
