Fake Feuds: Are Hollywood’s Biggest Rivalries All Made Up?

Lindsay Lohan vs. Hillary Duff. Selena Gomez vs. Miley Cyrus. Christina Aguilera vs. Britney Spears. Most so-called celebrity feuds are nothing more than the imaginings of a male-dominated industry that pits women against each other for the sake of entertainment value— that is, if you believe Selena Gomez, who told us last year that her rumored rivalry with Demi Lovato was not only a fictional one, but also the product of that very well established Hollywood double standard. This week, when Christina Aguilera came out as a huge supporter of her supposed archnemesis, Britney Spears, people were surprised, but they shouldn't have been. Their rivalry was nothing more than a faux feud. Here are five of our favorites!

1. Faux Feuds: Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera vs. Britney Spears

These Mickey Mouse Club alums have reportedly been feuding since they were both breakout pop stars in the late '90s, battling each other for chart dominance. However, based on their interaction on Twitter recently, it's clear there's no rivalry. Last week, Aguilera tweeted the following at her rumored archnemesis: "Hey @BritneySpears Congrats on Femme Fatale release! Can't wait to see what you bring in the next video. xo." Britney sweetly replied: "Thanks @TheRealXtina. Can't wait to watch you on your new show. Hope we get to hear that voice on The Voice." Of course, the press just had to know why Xtina would do such a thing. She explained: “I am a huge supporter of her in light of the fact that both of our careers started off together and are still going and going strong." War. What war?

2. Faux Feuds: Penelope Cruz/Eva Longoria

Penelope Cruz vs. Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria has been dating Penelope Cruz's younger brother, Eduardo Cruz on the low, and when Penelope found out about the affair, she started telling her closest friends that she was worried the romance was nothing more than a rebound fling for Eva— a fame-hungry, bad B-list actress who was using Eduardo in an effort to further her career. Scandalous, right? Too bad it's entirely untrue! Perez Hilton recently shot down the rumors that Penelope wants Eva to stay away from her baby bro, insisting there's no bad blood between the stars. A source close to the family tells Perez that Penelope and Eva have been friends for quite some time and that it was Pe who actually set Eva and Eduardo up. "Eva has been very welcomed into the family and all is well," the source insisted. So much for those rumors!

3. Faux Feuds: Cameron Diaz/Kate Hudson

Cameron Diaz vs. Kate Hudson

A while back, Kate Hudson, single at the time, saw a photo taken by a paparazzo of Cameron Diaz sneaking out of her ex-boyfriend, Alex Rodriguez's NYC penthouse, and Cameron had overnight bags in her hands. Horrified, Kate started telling her friends that Cameron was only dating A-Rod to get back at her for her Jan. 2007 hookup with Cam's ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. "Kate hates Cameron," a source told Us Weekly at the time. "She thinks it's payback, pure and simple." Since Kate now has a baby with another man and Cameron and A-Rod are still going strong, we think it's safe to say all the melodrama was nothing more than another faux feud.

5. Faux Feuds: Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato

Selena Gomez vs. Demi Lovato

In January 2010, rumors swirled that Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were no longer friends. But when we asked Lovato that summer about her rumored rivalry with her fellow Disney star Gomez, she squashed it, telling us, "I love her and I always will." Selena seems to feel the same way about Demi. She recently told the Spanish outlet, El Paradiario: "Many people believe that there is some rivalry between us, whether because of our age, our music or the programs that we do, etc. But there is no rivalry. Demi and I have been friends since we were six years old when we first met while working on the TV show Barney. She is my best friend," she explained. Last summer, Selena told us she thinks Hollywood likes to pit girls against one another. “You can’t care [about stuff like that],” said Gomez, who assured us that she and Demi were still friends. It’s really toxic what they do to girls in the industry. You never really see it with guys,” she said. “So you have to not care. Which I think is really good and positive for both of us.” Amen!

6. Faux Feuds: Shakira/Beyonce

Beyonce vs. Shakira

When Shaki and Beyonce teamed up for the song "Beautiful Liar" in 2007, people tried to pit them against each other. In fact, several media outlets even claimed that the two superstars filmed their video scenes separately because they couldn't stand the sight of one another. Of course it was all hogwash. Beyonce told us that Shakira was actually really great to work with: "She taught me some things and I taught her some things," B told Latina.com. "It was so great because she was so easy to work with and so supportive, such warmth. There was no negativity or competitive energy, just love and respect."
