Puerto Rican actor Erik Estrada (CHiPs) was all smiles last night as he made his dancing debut on the season premiere of Univision's hit show, ¡Mira Quién Baila! (AKA the Spanish-language version of Dancing with the Stars). But don't expect to see Estrada doing the pasodoble on ABC's Dancing with the Stars anytime soon. "I turned that down twice already," Estrada tells Latina.com exclusively. "My agent would come to me and say, 'would you be interested in doing it?' and I said, "no thank you."
Estrada told us why he was willing to do ¡Mira Quién Baila! "The way it came about was that my mother got wind that I was offered something in the Latino market," says Estrada. "And she said, 'Please! I want to see you on Latin television—you've got to do this for me.' Estrada told his mom he was nervous about learning the difficult dances that are required on the show. "I said, 'You know that I can disco and I can move my butt, but I can't do the salsa, the merengue, the cha-cha-cha and all of this other stuff," Estrada says. But his mom wasn't having it. "She said, 'so what? You'll learn! I want to see you, mijo. Por favor!"
Estrada says he owed it to his mom to do the show. "My mom's been both my father and my mother and she's always been my motivation and inspiration," he said. "That's why I've been successful, because of the love of my mother—because she gives me that luck.”
The actor says he looks forward to seeing his mami in the audience cheering him on. "My mother's going to come, and I'm really grateful to the show for helping me fulfill my mother's sueño," he said.
