EXCLUSIVE: Eva Mendes Breaks Down Her Sizzling Red Carpet Look and Bad-Girl Role in ‘Last Night’

We’ve seen a few famous faces at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, but none more stunning than Eva Mendes, who’s in New York to promote her new romantic drama, Last Night. We caught up with the 37-year-old Cuban American beauty at the official premiere and after-party for the film, which screened last night at the Borough of Manhattan Community College theater as part of the film fest.

Written, produced, and directed by an exciting new female voice in Hollywood, Massy Tadjedin (who looks Latina but is in fact Iranian American!) Last Night follows a New York City couple as they confront temptation. Married for seven years, Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael (Sam Worthington) are perfectly content and professionally successful. But one night, at a company party, Joanna picks up on flirtatious exchanges between Michael and a co-worker, the smart and seductive Laura (played by Mendes), causing her to question her husband’s ability to be faithful. The plot thickens when Michael heads out of town on a business trip for one night with Laura and some other colleagues—which we all know implies mini-bars and hot-tubs, among other things. Further complicating matters is a handsome ex of Joanna’s (played exquisitely by French actor/director Guillaume Canet, Marion Cotillard's hubby) who resurfaces from Paris right as Michael is in Philadelphia. So will they each act on their attractions for other people? You’ll just have to watch and see!

Beautifully shot blocks away from where it screened in New York, Last Night is an interesting exploration of fidelity as it pertains to most modern relationships. There really isn’t a judgment of what’s right vs. wrong here—there’s just what you do and what you don’t do. And while some people cheat physically, others do so emotionally (both can be devastating). The movie has a European feel to it, with all the nuances of romantic relationships set in NYC.

Eva, for her part, brings a quiet complexity to a character that could otherwise be dismissed as a mere seductress. In fact, her usually smoldering on-screen looks are purposely played down here so we can pay attention to what’s happening underneath. Working with her long-time acting coach Ivana Chubbuck, Mendes is constantly looking to evolve and not just be considered a ‘sexy Latina actress’—and Last Night displays a new level of maturity for our girl. Plus, she finally got to work with her girl crush, Keira! We can’t wait to see her play a single mami in Patricia Riggen’s (director of La Misma Luna) next film.

Last Night is available on Tribeca Films’ new video-on-demand platform, as well as via online streaming on iTunes and Netflix. It will also open theatrically (limited) on May 6.
