Eva Longoria is extremely giddy about the 2011 National Council of La Raza (NCLR) ALMA Awards. And why wouldn’t she be? The Mexican American star of Desperate Housewives is not only co-hosting the awards ceremony this year, but she’s also a longtime executive producer for the show. In an interview with Para Todos, the 36-year-old actress spoke about what viewers can expect from the one-hour primetime special, which will be broadcast on Sept. 16 at 8/7c on NBC. The ALMA Awards celebrates positive portrayals of Latinos in film, television, and music.
Longoria said that Latinos have had a good musical year, with our main man Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, and Demi Lovato making waves on the charts. Speaking of Lovato, Longoria said the 19-year-old former Disney starlet will perform her mega-hit ballad “Skyscraper,” at the awards ceremony. The song’s success has burned through YouTube and radio waves, shooting to the number one spot on iTunes soon after it was released earlier this summer. “She’s one of our own and she came up with the idea to sing partly in Spanish,” Longoria said of Lovato, “so we love to honor that!”
The actress also spoke about her dear friend George Lopez, whom she visited just three weeks ago on the last episode of his cancelled show, Lopez Tonight. Longoria described the 50-year-old Mexican American comedian as an amazing co-host and the most recognized comedian in the Latino community. “To be able to bring him on board every year not only provides for great entertainment but our chemistry has proven successful and we wanted to continue that relationship and that tone of the show,” she said.
After a year-long hiatus, we are glad to see the ALMA Awards back in full swing. This year’s presenters were recently announced – among them are Extra host Mario Lopez, journalist Maria Celeste Arrarás, and our August cover girl Jessica Alba.
