Commentary: Latinas Are Either Saints or Whores, According to New Movie

The Big Wedding movie poster

I’m one of those girls who’s a sucker for romantic comedies. Yes, I said it. I simply love any movie that takes a couple who just can’t seem to get their act together and ends with them finding their happily ever after.

I don’t care if the plot is kind of silly. I don’t care if the acting is awful. I don’t even necessarily care that the dialogue is dry and the chemistry isn’t ideal. I just want to see that love-conquers-all finale that always brightens my day and puts a smile on my single-girl-in-the-city face.

The 12 Funniest Cinco de Mayo Internet Memes Ever!

Cinco de Mayo has become quite the controversy. Seeing non-Latinos walking around plastered and wearing sombreros every May 5 is annoying. Spider-Man

Real Name: Miles Morales

Roots: Cuban and African American

First Appearance: August 2011

Spidey’s multi-culti makeover wasn’t a hit with everyone. Media loudmouths Lou Dobbs was appalled by Spider-Man’s new biracial identity and Glenn Beck accused Marvel of drawing Morales in the likeness of Barack Obama. Although this was the first time Spider-Man was African American, it wasn’t his first Latino incarnation. In 1992, Marvel developed 2099, a comic series set over 100 years in the future, and introduced Spiderman 2099, Mexican and Irish geneticist Miguel O’Hara.

It’s Cinco de Mayo not Mexican Independence Day. The day marks May 5, 1862 when Mexico defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla; a short-lived, overrated victory that in the U.S. has become a good excuse to party. Whether you partake or not, sombreros and drinking will be had. Chips and salsa are on sale at your local supermarket and celebrities are probably on their fifth margarita by now. To prepare you for the Mexican version of St. Patrick’s Day, here are 10 celebs who look ready to shout “Tequila!”

Nicki Minaj Blasts Mariah Carey on Twitter: The History of Their Idol-Size Drama

Thought the drama between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj was over? Think again. The American Idol judges started taking jabs at each other again this week. During Wednesday night's show, Mimi made a backhanded comment towards Nicki while critiquing one of the contestants and said, "Again, back to the Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 song, which you just performed -- which is difficult to get; not everybody has that."

A Precursor to the Drama?

In February 2010, Mariah Carey recruited Nicki Minaj, who was just starting to make her mark in the music industry, to appear on one of the tracks on the part-Venezuelan singer’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The pair even appeared together in the video for the aptly titled single, “Up Out of My Face,” which was directed by Carey’s husband Nick Cannon.
