On her favorite music: "I listen to music that moves me emotionally. I also listen to all types of music but the ones that really move me are the ones that influence what I do in the studio and what I end up writing."

On her faith: "I grew up Christian but as I've gotten older, I don’t necessarily believe in a lot of the same things that the Bible talks about. So I just focus on my relationship with God, and obviously trying to emulate Christ is something I still believe in but being realistic, I’m not Him. And I don’t believe that gay people go to hell. I don’t believe in a lot of what Christianity believes in anymore. When I started going to AA, working the 12 steps has kind of become my religion more than anything — but it’s still the same God."

On Wilmer always being her #1 cheerleader: "No matter how many times he tells me I have a beautiful body or figure, it all comes down to what I see myself. He used to tell me all the time, 'You have an incredible body,' but I never believed it until I started believing it, loving it and taking care of it. He’s helped me in a sense where he helps me stay accountable with food and staying on track with my health."

On the type of advice Jay Z has given her: "He has given me advice and been really helpful when it’s come to the creative direction of this next album. I sat with him and played him songs, and it was really cool because he reinstated, 'Follow your instincts.' It doesn’t matter about a radio hit. And I was like, 'How do you not worry about going number one, or having a failed single?' The thing is you will never know. You have to stop making that your goal and just start making music that is authentic to you. You have to have fun singing because people see through when it’s not authentic. Him telling me that really struck a cord with me going in the studio, and if I’m not inspired one day, not sticking around just because I’m in the studio and I feel like I have to do it. Creating it for the art of music. And that’s what I really respect of him as an artist. Then obviously he’s a businessman with an empire, no pun intended. He’s helped Nick a lot and we’re grateful for him, for sure."

On why she’s voting for Hillary Clinton: "I’m with her for many different reasons. First of all, we have the same beliefs. I love the way that she stands up for women’s rights. And I think it’s important that people remember that it’s not about her being a woman, which is great and it would be amazing if we had a woman president, but that’s not the reason why I’m with her."

On her secret obsession with UFC fighting: "It’s one of the most brutal sports out there [laughs]. There’s no bullshit, there’s blood, you can use anything, you can use your legs . . .  it’s just raw and that’s what I love about it. I can be, I’m not proud of it, but I can be kind of a violent person [laughs]. I love action and horror movies and things like that. It’s a good place for me to channel that energy [laughs]…other than going hard at the gym. It’s fun."

On how her dogs have helped her be a happier person: "I wasn’t a dog person until my family got our dog Bailey. We had another dog named Bella and she’s a sweetheart, and that’s kind of when I realized I fell in love with dogs because she’s so affectionate. Batman is a Yorkie-Poo. He’s my little superhero. He’s my emotional support. He’s here right now. He’s the cutest, sweetest thing. I went through some stuff this last year that was extremely painful — one being the loss of Buddy. I didn’t realize how close you can become to an animal until I raised Buddy and I’m raising Batman. When you raise something from weeks old and you’re there with them every second of the day they become your babies. I really honestly feel like I have a child. It was a beautiful thing to be able to have that connection with Buddy and it’s even more beautiful now that I get the memories of him, plus the experience with Batman that I wouldn’t have had if things hadn't happened the way that they did."
