Only a lucky few people in the world can claim they've know their best friends since they were seven years old.
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, both 21, have been BFFs since they were little girls. Now, the two fierce, independent Latinas are both successful singers, actresses, and businesswomen!
From Barney to Disney to the big screen, Demi and Selena have been friends -- through thick and through thin -- for over ten years. Check out the timeline of their journey as besties:

In 2002, the pals met while auditioning for Barney and Friends. Although the audition fell on Selena’s birthday, the eager actress stood in line in Dallas, Texas with 1,400 other girls to compete for a role on the show. And who happened to be standing in front of her in line? None other than Demi! “The girl in front of me had a blue jean jacket on and a really cute red bow, and it was Demi,” Selena told E! News, “She turned around, and she was very sweet.”
Barney and Friends:
Luckily, the new friends both landed roles on Barney! The two youngsters appeared on various episodes of the series between 2002 and 2004. Check out the adorable videos of them singing and dancing with everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur.
Disney Channel Sweethearts:
In 2007, Demi and Selena both set their sights on a role with The Disney Channel. Luckily, they didn’t have to worry about competition from their bestie. Gomez auditioned for Wizards of Waverly Place, earning the starring role of Alex Russo. Meanwhile Lovato set her sights on roles in the movie Camp Rock and Disney show Sonny With A Chance -- auditioning for both parts on the same day!
Princess Protection Program:
In 2008, the two starlets were given the opportunity of a lifetime: Disney wanted the BFFs to star in a movie together! The two adorably revealed the big news in their first video blog. “This is my best friend in the entire world,” Demi gushed in the video podcast, “We’ve haven’t shot anything together since Barney!” The pair continued to update their YouTube channel with vlogs for the next several months.
Two Brothers For Two Best Friends:
Between 2008 and 2010, the pair of best friends were both initiated into the world of dating and relationships courtesy of a handsome pair of brothers -- Joe and Nick Jonas! Gomez dished on her break-up with Nick to Cosmopolitan: “I wasn’t myself for a year. I think that was really damaging. I felt like it was me always trying to be perfect for him.” Demi was stuck in a similar situation with Nick’s older bro, Joe. Luckily, Gomez and Lovato always had each other to lean on.
Uh oh! Selena Replaces Demi:
In January 2010, Demi Lovato was asked by a fan about Selena’s well-being. Lovato hastily responded, “Ask Taylor!” This was the first evidence that the two Latinas were beginning to grow apart, and rumors began to emerge that Selena Gomez had a new best friends -- country crooner, Taylor Swift.
In the June 2010 issue of Girl’s Life, Demi alluded to a falling out with her bestie. “We’re both busy, and I wish the best for her,” she said, “True friends don’t let their friends or family be mean to you. If you can’t trust somebody, you can’t be friends with them.”
Trial and Tribulations:
When Demi Lovato entered rehab in late 2010, many were worried about the young starlet’s emotional and physical well-being. Fortunately, the actress and singer has been open about her struggles and seems to be doing well -- thanks, in part, to supportive friends and family. “Selena...she called me crying when I was in there, and was just so worried,” Demi told Televisionet, “I was like, ‘Look, I should be the one crying, it’s all good!’...But she was so worried and ever since then we’ve gotten closer.”
Demi was released from rehab in early 2011, and later that year, she was spotted with Selena on the red carpet of the Teen Choice Awards. The two seemed to be having a blast, leading many to speculate that the drama was over and the two were back to being best friends.
Growing Older, Growing Apart:
In early 2013, Demi Lovato came clean about her falling out with Selena Gomez. “We’ve been through a lot together,” she told MTV News, “We’ve had period of time where we grew apart and we just didn’t really talk.” Although Lovato admitted the two no longer talk every day, she maintained that it “doesn’t invalidate” their friendship at all. According to Lovato, Gomez is still her number one fan and biggest supporter.
The Evidence of Forever:
Despite their busy schedules and changing lives, Selena and Demi will always have a place in each other’s hearts. Selena Gomez posted this adorable selfie backstage at The X Factor USA in November 2013 with the caption: “This is the evidence of forever.” The 20-somethings have been friends for over a decade...and we’re hoping they stay friends forever!
