Last year was a “rough” one for Christina Aguilera.
The part-Ecuadorian singer had an incredibly bumpy ride in 2011, which included getting arrested for public intoxication, fighting child abuse allegations, and consistent criticism about her body, according to People. The 30-year-old opened up about her body image and more to Marie Claire for the magazine’s February 2012 cover issue.
“I've been through my highs, I've been through my lows,” The Voice coach told the magazine, in reference to the flood of remarks she’s received about her weight throughout the years. “Being too thin. Being bigger. I've been criticized for being on both sides of the scale.” Aguilera said she happens to be “very comfortable” in her own skin.
As for her critics? “It's noise I block out automatically,” the singer said. “My son is healthy and happy, so that's all that matters to me.”
Speaking of her son Max, Aguilera also reflected on her divorce from his father, music marketer Jordan Bratman. Aguilera and Bratman divorced back in 2010, and the singer said that’s a hard experience for anyone to go through in public. “But when you're a celebrity and under a microscope, it's 58 million times harder,” she said. We can only imagine.
Aguilera added that she and Bratman always put their son first. “I have to surround my son with positive, strong relationships so that he feels he has a cohesive family," she adds. “Children of divorce feel broken when parents want to take shots at each other. There are many different types of families; I try to center ours around Max and his happiness.”
For Aguilera, time heals everything. “Sometimes you have to go through that pain and heartbreak so that you can get to the other side and come out on top,” she said. Keep your head up, chica!
