Part-Cuban actor Bobby Cannavale is ready to take the next step in his Broadway career, and with an iconic, star-making role no less! Deadline is reporting that the 41-year-old actor has landed the lead role in the revival of Funny Girl. The romantic musical is based on the career and personal life of Broadway star/comedian Fanny Brice and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, Nicky Arnstein, a professional gambler who spent much time in and out of jail.
This is Funny Girl’s first time back on Broadway since its original run in the late 60s. The production, featuring music by British-born songwriter Jule Styne, ran for three years in 1967. In the revival, Cannavale will play Arnstein opposite Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under). The musical will be led by award-winning theatre director Bartlett Sher.
We’re sure Cannavale is excited about his new gig, and we are too. Cannavale has been nominated for two Tony Awards— the first for his role in the Broadway play, Mauritius, and the second for his role in Chris Rock’s The Motherf**ker With the Hat. Here’s hoping this new role proves Tony-worthy!
