UPDATE: A-Rod Suspended, Will Play for Yankees While Awaiting Appeal

After discussions to suspend A-Rod using the collective-bargaining agreement, which would have put him off the field immediately, MLB was leaning toward using the joint drug agreement, which permits a stay of the suspension pending appeal.

Fox News Latino reports that the 38-year-old could face a shorter penalty if he agrees to give up the right to file a grievance and force the case before an arbitrator.

During negotiations, Rodriguez asked to be treated as a first-time offender, which under baseball's drug agreement equals a 50-game suspension.

MLB is expected to announce A-Rod's suspension, along with a dozen others, on Monday afternoon.
