The Massachusetts Department of Correction released a statement confirming the former New England Patriot's death. Officials say he was discovered in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass., around 3 a.m. The athlete, who was convicted of murder in 2013, was then transported to a hospital, where lifesaving techniques were used. Hernandez was pronounced dead ast 4:07 a.m.
According to the statement, Hernandez hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window. “Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items," it said.
Just last month, Hernandez's former friend Alexander Bradley claimed he shot and killed two Boston clubgoers. Hernandez, however, was initially sentenced to life in prison just two years ago after the murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of his fiancée. He was still set to face life in prison without parole.
