The Latino Breakout Stars of 2013!

Before we kiss 2013 goodbye, let’s reflect on all the amazing popculture moments this year had to offer. Sure, Latinos are still underrepresent in movies, on TV, and in popular music, but we’re gaining Talented up-and-coming Latino stars are popping up everywhere, and it’s time to give a shout out to the best new talent of the year!

From Becky G to Fifth Harmony, here are the breakout stars of 2013:

1. Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony:
The group -- which boasts three Latinas, Ally Brooke Hernandez, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui -- had a huge year. At the end of 2012, they were booted off reality singing competition The X Factor, finishing in third place. Despite the loss, the ladies came out on top! Just one month later, in January 2013, the girls signed with Epic Records and Syco Music.  They quickly began working on their debut album, which hit stores on October 22, 2013.  Most notably, the girls racked up a huge, enthusiastic fan base (they are all over Tumblr!), released multiple hit singles, and signed a touring deal with Demi Lovato, Little Mix, and Cher Lloyd.

2. Ryan Guzman

Ryan Guzman:
2013 was the year of Ryan Guzman. The sexy Mexican-American actor picked up a hot role on the hit ABC teen drama, Pretty Little Liars, wooing Aria (and the audience) with his kickass martial arts moves. What’s next for the actor? Guzman is currently filming a steamy thriller, The Boy Next Door, co-starring Jennifer Lopez!

3. Orange Is The New Black

The Latinas of Orange Is The New Black:
Seriously, everyone was obsessed with this show in 2013...with good reason! The dark comedy was hysterical, engaging, and completely addictive. The best part of all, however, were the fierce Latina characters played by Dascha Polanco, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Selenis Leyva, Jackie Cruz, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Pimentel, and Laura Gomez. We can’t wait to see more of these feisty ladies in season 2...and hopefully in more movies and TV shows!

4. Edy Ganem

Edy Ganem:
Lifetime’s new comedy Devious Maids starred several incredible Latinas, but it introduced us to up-and-comer Edy Ganem for the first time. She may be young, but the gorgeous Mexicana proved that she’s a true leading lady during the first season of the hit comedy. Expect a lot more from this chica in 2014!

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The Cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine:
The comedy Brooklyn Nine=Nine follows a group of detectives in Brooklyn’s (fictional) 99th Precinct. Critics have applauded the FOX comedy for spotlighting diverse characters, including Detective Rosa Diaz and Detective Amy Santiago, played by Latinas Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero. The show has been positively reviewed by critics and audiences, and even picked up a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Television Series -- Musical or Comedy.” We expect the show -- and the actresses -- to be a household name in 2014.

6. Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac:
Oscar Isaac has been generating tons of Oscar buzz for his standout performance in the Coen Brother’s flick Inside Llewyn Davis. The part-Cuban, part-Guatemalan actor and singer has appeared in Drive, Robin Hood, Sucker Punch and more, but his career didn’t really take-off until he took on the role of Llewyn Davis. Luckily for us, the film allowed him to show off his singing and acting chops. Hopefully, this time next year, we’ll be talking about his well-deserved Academy Award win!

7. Becky G

Becky G:
It’s hard to believe that Becky G is just 16-years-old! The adorable rapper and singer has been blowing up the charts with tracks like Wish You Were Here (with Cody Simpson) and Play It Again. But, we really knew our and February cover girl was going to be a huge star when Jennifer Lopez agreed to make a cameo in her video for Becky From The Block! We can’t wait to see what’s next for the teen!

8. Cierra Ramirez & David Lambert

Cierra Ramirez & David Lambert:
Cierra Ramirez, 18, and David Lambert, 21, teamed up with fellow Latino Jake T. Austin, 19, to star in the hit series, The Fosters. The Jennifer Lopez produced comedy follows the Foster family, a lesbian couple raising three children together. While Austin was already on our radar (Thanks to his role on the Disney Channel comedy Wizards of Waverly Place), Ramirez and Lambert are two up-and-comers who haven't had much spotlight in the past. Their acting chops are undeniable, and we think all three Latinos are going to be huge stars in the years to come.

9. Gabriela Isler, Miss Universe

Gabriela Isler:
This gorgeous Venezuelan made headlines in 2013 when she won the title of Miss Universe! The 25-year-old wowed the judges with her beauty, intelligence, and poise. For the next year, Isler will serve as the reigning Miss expect to see a lot of the Latin American beauty.

10. Carlito Olivero

Carlito Olivero:

The former Menudo member rose to stardom this year with a little help from Mexican superstar Paulina Rubio. Carlito, a contestant on The X Factor USA, owes much of his success to Rubio, his judge and mentor. The part-Puerto Rican, part-Mexican crooner quickly racked up an enthusiastic fan base, who took to Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook to rally support and votes for the X Factor finalist. Whether or not he wins the competition on Thursday night, Olivero had a huge year...and we’re expecting an even bigger 2014!
