15 Things We're Looking Forward to in 2013!

Now that the notorious Mayan prophecy has failed to result in the end of the world on December 21, 2012 – to worldwide sighs of relief – it’s probably safe to start planning for the New Year. And there’s a lot to look forward to, including a new soapy series about ambitious Latina maids and highly anticipated reality-television roles for Mariah Carey and Shakira. So without further ado, here’s a look at the 15 Things We’re Looking Forward to in 2013.

1. Looking Forward to in 2013: Devious Maids

Maids to Order
As if a brand new television series based on a Mexican telenovela about some ambitious maids working for the filthy rich in Beverly Hills isn’t enough to spark your interest, Lifetime’s Devious Maids stars some of our favorite Latina actresses: Roselyn Sanchez, Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes and Dania Ramirez. Developed by Desperate Housewives’ creator Marc Cherry and executive-produced by Eva Longoria, Devious Maids sounds treacherously terrific!

2. Looking Forward to in 2013: Inauguration

A Presidential EVAent

Serving as co-chairwoman of President Obama’s reelection campaign, working tirelessly to help get the president re-elected. And now Eva Longoria is assisting in the Commander in Chief’s swearing ceremony. The former Desperate Housewives’ star is the co-chair of the Presidential Inaugural Committee. So we’re stoked to see if Longoria will help bring some Latin flair to the big event on Monday, January 21, 2013.

3. Looking Forward to in 2013: Jessica Sanchez on Glee

Gleek-in-Waiting

She may have been home-schooled, but Jessica Sanchez is getting ready to attend high school. Glee’s fictional William McKinley High School, that is. Last season’s American Idol runner-up has landed a recurring role on Fox’s hit musical dramedy. Though little had been revealed about her character, the pint-sized half-Mexican singer will begin filming her multi-episode arc in January. And we expect Sanchez, in her first acting role ever, will be schooling the cast with her big voice in no time.

4. Looking Forward to in 2013: Shakira on The Voice

Mommy Mentor

It’s shaping up to be a big year for Shakira. The Colombian singing sensation will fill Christina Aguilera’s red leather chair for the spring edition of NBC’s The Voice, premiering on Monday, March 25. And the first promo featuring Shakira already proves she’ll be a refreshing addition to the show. But there’s another reason Shakira will have plenty to celebrate in 2013… She’ll also give birth to her first child in 2013, a son with Spanish soccer stud Gerard Piqué. And we can’t wait to see her shine in both new roles!

5. Looking Forward to in 2013: Star Trek

Trek Star!

This May, Zoë Saldaña will be star trekkin'…across the universe all over again. She’ll be reprising her role as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to J.J. Abrams-directed sequel to the 2009 blockbuster hit reboot to the sci-fi film franchise. The film promises to be action-packed and emotional exhausting, as evidenced by the movie’s recently released trailers featuring Saldaña in tears.

6. Looking Forward to in 2013: William Levy

Big Screen Levy

He’s mastered telenovelas, acted in his first English-language television series (VH1’s Single Ladies) and impressed America with his Dancing (with the Stars) skills. And in 2013, William Levy will be appearing on the big screen for the first time ever. The Cuban American actor will star in the first of three Hollywood films, Boom Town, which centers on a savvy businessman who becomes the target of a corrupt border town sheriff and a notorious land boss after they discover that he's sitting on a fortune. Sounds intriguing. Only question is…  Will Levy appear shirtless?

7. Looking Forward to in 2013: American Idol

American Idol

Filling Jennifer Lopez’s Loboutins on American Idol seemed like a monumental task, until Fox announced that they’d scoured a major coup, hiring Mariah Carey to sit at the judges table. Then rumors surfaced that the Grammy-winning singer had some major drama with fellow judge Nicki Minaj at one of the show’s first audition tapings. And, now America’s waiting with bated breath to see how Carey will do, and if sparks will fly with the rap superstar during the live shows. We… Can’t.. Wait!

8. Looking Forward to in 2013: Dallas

Southfork Stud!

TNT’s Dallas reboot proved to be a rating success, with two Latinas in prominent roles (Jordana Brewster and Julie Gonzalo). For the second season, producers have added even more Latin spice to the mix, former telenovela star Kuno Becker. The Mexican actor will play Elena’s brother Andres, who was raised on Southfork with the Ewing boys. “He comes back from Afghanistan with a lot of anger and wants to drill his late father’s land,” says Becker of his character. “I’ve had to do a lot of training with firearms, and I get to shoot in a big action scene, but I can’t reveal at what or who.” Sounds intriguing! Dallas’ second season premieres on January 28.

9. Looking Forward to in 2013: Sin City 2

Nancy’s Back!

Back in 2005, Jessica Alba set tongues wagging when she portrayed exotic-dancer-with-a-heart-of-gold Nancy Callahan in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s neo-noir crime thriller Sin City. It’s one of those pop culture moments – Alba’s character dancing on the bar while swinging a lasso – that red-blooded men just can’t get out of their heads. And now the half-Mexican American actress is set to do it all over again in the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2013. !Ay, caramba!

10. Looking Forward to in 2013: Selena Gomez

And I Keep Hittin' Repeat-Peat-Peat-Peat-Peat-Peat

Our hearts sank when Selena Gomez announced she’d be taking a break from music to focus on acting projects. After all, she had us hittin’ repeat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat with songs like the infectious “Love You Like a Love Song” and dancetastic “Hit the Lights.” So imagine our excitement when Ryan Seacrest tweeted “@selenagomez just told me new album in march fyi” during an event attended by the two in Dallas.

11. Looking Forward to in 2013: The Place Beyond the Pines

Behind The Pines

They’re one of the hottest couples in Hollywood. And, now we’ll get to see the sparks fly as Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling share screen time in the multi-generational crime film The Place Beyond the Pines. Set for release on March 29, 2013, the film centers on a stunt motorcycle rider (Gosling), who turns to knocking over banks to better provide for his infant son and baby mama (Mendes). Plus you’ll get to experience Gosling and Mendes’ love in full bloom on the big screen!

12. Looking Forward to in 2013: Bobby Cannavale

Give The Man a Tony!

Bobby Cannavale, a former Tony nominee, is currently starring opposite Al Pacino in the Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross. And the half-Cuban-American actor is earning rave reviews for his role in the play’s limited run, which ends on January 20. But if he doesn’t earn a Tony nod for his work in that production, Cannavale will get another chance in the highly anticipated revival of Clifford Odets’ play The Big Knife, which opens for previews on March 22, 2013.  He’s “one of those modern actors who you can really imagine fitting right into the 1940s,” says the production’s artistic director. “There’s something wonderfully old-school about him.” Sounds like the perfect Tony bait to us!

13. Looking Forward to in 2013: Filly Brown

Jenni Rivera’s Last Hurrah

Filly Brown won over audiences at the Sundance Film Festival nearly a year ago with impressive performances by Gina Rodriguez as an aspiring hip-hop artist and Jenni Rivera as her drug-addicted, incarcerated mother. And this April, la Diva de la Banda’s fans will finally get the chance to see Rivera’s first, and sadly last, acting role. “Her acting is incredible,” says Rivera’s co-star in the film Edward James. “She can win the Oscar.”

14. Looking Forward to in 2013: Parker

Out of Sight… Again!

Back in 1998, Jennifer Lopez earned rave reviews when she starred opposite George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s crime film Out of Sight. "Ms. Lopez has her best movie role thus far, and she brings it both seductiveness and grit,” said one New York Times critic. “If it was hard to imagine a hard-working, pistol-packing bombshell on the page, it couldn't be easier here." And, it looks like J.Lo could earn another round of rave reviews for playing a “savvy insider” in the crime thriller, Parker, which features action star Jason Statham in the title role. The film is set to open January 25, 2013.

15. Looking Forward to in 2013: Evelyn Lozada

Rebound That Basketball

Following a tumultuous year in romance, Evelyn Lozada is returning to the show that made her a star. The Puerto Rican reality star, Latina’s new fitness blogger, will be starring in season five of VH1’s Basketball Wives. Lozada broke the news herself via Twitter in November. "The time has finally arrived tweeps! I'm heading to film BBW5 Miami !" said Lozada. Optimistic but at the same time kind of afraid, Lozada added "let us pray." Basketball Wives Season 5 is set to premiere on VH1 in early 2013.
