We Love? Her!
In 2010, there was never a dull moment when it came to Jennifer Lopez and 2011 promises more of the same. The busy actress-singer-entrepreneur is not only joining FOX's smash hit, American Idol as a new judge, but she's also releasing her new album, Love?, which La Lopez says expresses her own questions about love and life. "For me, love is the never-ending question," she says. "It’s the answer, but it’s also inundated with contradictions and complications. It’s about years of experience in different relationships, and kind of the culmination of that, and how even to this day, I’m still learning." Look for Love? in early 2011.
Robert Pattinson who?
A few years ago, Shiloh Fernandez, 25, was one of the frontrunners to play the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. When he didn't get the role, which eventually went to Robert Pattinson, Hollywood forgot about Shiloh — until now! The brooding hunk, whose had recurring roles on TV shows like Jericho and The United States of Tara has been cast as the male lead in Red Riding Hood, Warner Bros' gothic horror re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale. The film, which opens on March 11, 2011, is being directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first Twilight movie. Starring opposite Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls), we're betting this tall, dark and handsome actor will become a big star in 2011!
Cameron Diaz, Superwoman
Cameron Diaz, the highest paid actress in Hollywood, has starred in just about every type of movie you can think of: she’s done romantic comedies (There’s Something About Mary, My Best Friend’s Wedding), action movies (Charlie’s Angels, Knight and Day), animated movies (Shrek)—she’s even done the occasional thriller (The Box). But in 2011, Diaz will add a new genre to her resume—the superhero movie! The talented Cuban actress will star as Lenore “Casey” Case, Reid’s (Seth Rogen) love interest in the action-comedy, The Green Hornet, opening nationwide on January 14, 2011. But don’t expect Diaz’s character to be a helpless damsel in distress — Lenore is a no-nonsense gal who helps Reid hunt down gritty villains.
Penelope as 'Pirate'
Penelope Cruz will play Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) love interest in the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise — Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which opens on May 20th, 2011. In the movie, which will focus on Jack Sparrow's early years, Cruz plays Angelica, a mysterious woman from Jack's past. Penelope is the second Latina to star as Depp's love interest in the series (Zoe Saldana was the first). We are sooo on board with this movie!
Alice in Latina-land
After playing the bratty (and totally clueless) Carla in the Tony-winning Broadway show, In the Heights, Cuban actress, Janet Dacal will portray Alice, the titular character in Broadway’s upcoming show, Wonderland — a take on the classic Alice in Wonderland story. The play is about a modern-day woman (Dacal) who goes on a life-changing adventure below the streets of New York City, where she meets colorful characters that help her rediscover what’s really important. Wonderland opens on April 27, 2011 at the Nederlander Theater in New York City.
Newcomer Seychelle Gabriel (who we predict will become a big star in 2011), stars in a new Steven Spielberg produced drama called, Falling Skies, which will premiere on TNT in June, 2011. The show, which stars Noah Wyley, is about a group of civilians that are trying to survive an attack from aliens. Seychelle, who's part-Mexican, plays Lourdes, a young girl orphaned by the attack who works at a makeshift hospital. The character is a Latina from Mexico City.
The Jersey Shore
After a somewhat disappointing second season in Miami, the gang is back at the Jersey Shore! And we know from watching season 1, that that's where they're the most comfortable. In the new season, premiering in early spring, Snooki gets arrested, J-Woww is going through a painful break-up, and Sammi leaves the house. (Wait, didn't all of this already happen in the first two seasons?). Who cares? We'll be watching!
Jordana Brewster will be reprising her role as badass street racer, Mia Toretto in Fast Five, the fifth installment in The Fast and the Furious series. The movie, which also stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, promises more of the same high-speed action scenes that we saw in the first four movies, except that all of the racing in this movie takes place on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. If you haven't seen the first four movies, get up to speed with them before Fast Five hits theaters on April 29, 2011.
From Prada to Nada
From Prada to Nada, a Latina spin on Jane Austen's classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, is being directed by Fina Torres (Woman on Top), and stars three Latinas: Oscar nominated actress, Adriana Barraza (Babel), Camilla Belle (When A Stranger Calls) and Alexa Vega (Spykids). The movie about two rich, spoiled sisters who lose all of their money and are forced to move to their aunt's East Los Angeles home, also stars Wilmer Valderama. With a cast like that, you can bet we're going to be watching From Prada to Nada when it opens on January 28, 2011!
Off the Map
Off the Map is a new medical drama set in a tiny town in the South American jungle. Executive produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy), the new series stars Valerie Cruz as Zitajalehrena (Zee) Alvarez, a no-nonsense doctor with a big heart, who works at the remote medical clinic. The series premieres on January 12th at 10 p.m.
Brazilian actress, Camille Belle, whose boyfriend Joe Jonas is known to be celibate, will be playing a virgin in her next movie — Mary, Mother of Christ. Belle will portray the Virgin Mary in the film, opposite stars Al Pacino and Peter O'Toole. The film will be released in April, 2011.
