A few days ago, Mexican journalist Jorge Ramos interviewed Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and in addition to grilling him about immigration (and a plethora of other issues), Ramos asked Mitt about the thing everyone's been talking about: his Mexican roots. "Are you Mexican American?" asked Ramos. "Could you be the first Hispanic President?"
"I would love to be able to convince people of that - particularly in a Florida primary," joked Romney with a laugh. "But I think that might be disingenuous on my part, because in my case, my dad was born in Mexico and I'm proud of my heritage, but he was born of U.S. citizens who were living in Mexico at the time and was not Hispanic."
Romney went on to explain that his father George Romney didn't speak the mother tongue. "He never spoke Spanish, nor did his parents, so I can't claim that honor." Ramos followed up with the question: "So you wouldn't call yourself Mexican American?" Romney responded, "I don't think people would think I was being honest with them if I said I was Mexican American."
What did you think of Jorge Ramos' interview with Mitt Romney?
Mitt Romney, 64
