Mexican American Studies Books Banned in Arizona

Seven books that were a part of a controversial Mexican American Studies program are not allowed to be taught in classrooms in Tucscon, reports the Huffington Post. 

The Tucson Unified School District in Arizona suspended the Mexican American Studies program in the schools because many believed it to be one-sided and unbalanced, teaching students to resent Anglos, reported Fox News Latino. The Arizona legislature passed legislation in 2010 banning public school courses that promoted ethnic solidarity. 

TUSD says the books are not "banned" as they are still available in school libraries -- they just aren't taught as part of the curriculum. 

So what books made the list? Here are the titles:

Critical Race Theory by Richard Delgado

500 Years of Chicano History in Pictures edited by Elizabeth Martinez

Message to AZTLAN by Rodolfo Corky Gonzales

Chicano! The History of the Mexican Civil Rights Movement by Arturo Rosales

Occupied America: A History of Chicanos by Rodolfo Acuna

Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire

Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years by Bill Bigelow
