Chris Kelly of Kris Kross Dies at 34

Chris Kelly, also known as the “Mac Daddy” of the rap duo Kris Kross, has died, reports The Associated Press. The 34-year-old rapper was found unresponsive in his home yesterday afternoon and was later taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be held today. According to The Atlanta Journal, authorities are investigating the case as a drug overdose.

Famous for breaking norms by wearing their clothing backwards and making us want to “Jump” with their radio hit, Kelly and group member Chris Smith (“Daddy Mac") dominated the hip-hop scene back in 1992, when they were only 13 and 12 years old. Their first album, Totally Krossed Out, reached number one and sold over 4 million records.

Donna Kelly Pratte, Kelly’s mom, released a statement regarding her son’s death:

“To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

Our thoughts are with the Kelly family. Were you a Kris Kross fan back in the day?
