Lessons From Selena Gomez: How To Bounce Back From A Breakup

In a recent interview with Seventeen, Selena Gomez admits that she suffered through a horrible break-up right when she turned 20. And yet, despite her neverending Justin Bieber drama, this past year has been Selena’s best yet: she released an album, starred in Spring Breakers, went on a world tour, and collaborated on clothing lines with KMart and Adidas.

Clearly, the Mexican-American superstar has a lot to teach us about bouncing back from a breakup. Here are the five things we've learned from Selena Gomez about how to win a breakup:

1. Embrace Your Power

Embrace Your Power

We’ve all been there: rough breakups can affect you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When you’ve been with your partner for a long time, it can be hard to discover who you are without them.

Selena Gomez admits that finding your power after a breakup can be difficult, but it’s necessary to embrace your independence and focus on your personal ambitions. She dished to Seventeen about how she reacted following her breakup from Justin Bieber. “Then I turned 20, and went through a really bad breakup,” she says. “And I realized I need to have ‘Come & Get It’ be amazing. I wanted it to be all me. I’m glad it’s taken me this long to get where I am because now I am ready for it.”

2. Do What You Love

Do What You Love

Following her breakup, Gomez jumped right back into what’s important: her work. In 2013, she released her hit album Stars Dance, starred in Springbreakers and Getaway, and performed on a world tour.

In late 2013, rumors swirled that the two were back together especially after Justin Bieber posted an Instagram shot of the two embracing with the caption, “Love the way she looks at me.” However, just a month later, the 19-year-old pop star was arrested in Miami for drag racing. Selena Gomez didn’t let it bring her down. Instead, she posted an Instagram shot a few days later rocking a pair of sexy heels and getting busy in the studio. Way to go, Selena!

3. Focus On Family

Focus on Familia

Amid speculation that “Jelena” were back together, Selena Gomez was happily spending time with those most important to her: her family.

She posted a picture holding her baby sister, Gracie, and said, “I’m the happiest I’ve been in a while. So blessed and thankful for the future, for release, and to finally be happy for those I loved.”

4. Girl Talk

Girl Talk

Let’s be real: when you’re having boy drama, the first person you want to talk to is your best friend.

The same holds true for Selena Gomez. The night of her rumored boyfriend’s arrest, Gomez was spotted out with Demi Lovato. Gomez and Lovato were both all-smiles as they exited a West Hollywood restaurant together. We all know best friends are the best remedy for any heartbreak...and we’re glad Gomez turns to Lovato when she needs a shoulder to lean on!

5. A Little Rebound Never Hurt Anybody

A Little Rebound Never Hurt Anybody

Whether it was George Shelley, the mystery man at Sundance, or Austin Mahone, Gomez made headlines in the last year for all the men she reportedly dated who weren’t Justin Bieber.

There’s no need to rush into a new relationship after an old one has ended, but there’s also no harm in being young and having, ahem, some fun after a breakup. We love that Selena has kept her options open!
