After a long day of filming scenes, Natalie Martinez is all about coming home and kissing a big, chubby, hairy face—or two. Her two bulldogs, Moose and Nola, are all the Cuban American actress needs to unwind and get ready for her upcoming projects and there are quite a few—CBS’s Under the Dome (returning June 30), her new ABC show Secrets & Lies (premiering this fall), sci-fi thriller Selfless (out in February 2015), and a horror film, Home Invasion (no release date yet). Now back to those furballs. “They always say, ‘See who loves you more, your wife or your dog?” Martinez says. “Put them in a trunk for half an hour and see who gets happy when you open it.” Our guess is the pooch.

We know you’ve been sworn to secrecy but what can you tell us about the upcoming season of Under the Dome? I heard . . .

What’d you hear? [Laughs] The thing with Stephen King is that everyone dies and everyone comes back to life. So you never know with his mind where things go. It’s the same with Steven Spielberg too. With Under the Dome you can’t ever expect anything. So we’ll leave it at that.

Congrats! ABC just picked up your new show, Secrets & Lies. Tell us a little bit about it.

Secrets & Lies is a crime mystery drama and it stars Ryan Phillippe and Juliette Lewis. You’re presented with the case: Ryan Phillippe goes for a run and finds my 5-year-old son dead in the woods. So Juliette comes and investigates and you start realizing that people are holding a lot of secrets and lies. I don’t know too much because they’re not showing us anything. We’re actually shooting the ending three different ways, so we’re going to be as much in the guessing game as you guys are.

And you’re also in a film (Selfless) with another Ryan…Ryan Reynolds.

Selfless is a sci-fi thriller and Sir Ben Kingsley’s in it and he’s trying to find immortality. I don’t want to give too much away, but Ryan comes into play where I thought he was dead for a while. I play his wife, so when he comes around I start to see, is it my husband or did some funny business happen there? Is it my husband or did someone use his body for something? My character is a strong single mother who thought she’s was alone and once she see her husband comes back it rocks her world and what he’s brought into their lives and now they’re running to save themselves from being killed.

Before the modeling and the acting, we read that you wanted to be a nurse.

Yes, I wanted to deliver babies and become a midwife. I think childbirth is one of the most amazing things you could ever experience and I loved working with people and seeing the joys in family when they welcome a new member to it. It really brought me joy to be around that. And when I got the opportunity to become a model, it’s like all right school’s always going to be there if it didn’t work out I would have gone back.
