According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 14.5% of women suffer at least one pregnancy complication -- everything from depression to diabetes to high blood pressure. These complications can be frightening, dangerous, and physically draining for many moms-to-be.
These mothers are not alone. Many women have suffered through the same ordeal, and many have given birth to beautiful, healthy children. From Camila Alves to Salma Hayek, these five celebrity mothers have shared their stories about tough pregnancies:
1. Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek spoke openly and candidly about her “difficult pregnancy” with daughter, Valentina. Hayek, who was 40 when she became pregnant, suffered from gestational diabetes, a condition that can lead to miscarriage, birth defects, and complications during delivery.
The actress and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, were even told that their daughter would be born with Down Syndrome. Thankfully, Hayek gave birth to a healthy, beautiful child in September of 2007.
2. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey, who suffered from a miscarriage in the past, had a difficult time while pregnant with her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. In fact, Carey underwent progesterone supplements until she reached the 10-week mark of her high-risk pregnancy.
“My pregnancy was very unique in terms of what happened to me,” she revealed. Carey, who was 40 when she became pregnant, was diagnosed with preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Preeclampsia is defined as high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Luckily for Mariah Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon, she gave birth to a beautiful girl and boy on April 30, 2011.
Former Jersey Shore star Snooki openly discussed her challenging pregnancy with her first child, Lorenzo. The pint-sized Latina called her pregnancy “disgusting” and “awful.” She didn't let the challenges dissuade her from having another child. The Chilean reality TV star is pregnant with baby no. 2!
4. Camila Alves
Matthew McConaughey’s wife, Camila Alves, faced challenges while pregnant with their third child, Levi. “I had a really tough pregnancy -- I had all kinds of things happen throughout the whole [nine months],” she said. “I had strong pains and kept telling the doctors... no one could figure it out. We ended up having to do a c-section.”
The model didn’t elaborate on her specific health problems, but she admits the forced downtime took a toll on her ability to raise her older children, Livingston and Vida.
“[The] recovery [was] extremely hard because I had a c-section and all these extra procedures,” she said. “I [wasn’t] able to exercise... I couldn’t even pick up my kids.”
5. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez reportedly had an extremely challenging pregnancy. A source close to her and then-husband, Marc Anthony, said that she was forced to go to the hospital after spotting blood in her urine. Her doctor told the singer to take it easy and cut out all strenuous activity. Fortunately, JLo and Marc gave birth to beautiful twins Max and Emme in 2008.
