"Wizards of Waverly Place" Movie Powers On

In May, I told you movie magic was ahead for Selena Gomez and the cast of Wizards, and I wasn't kidding. Things are about to get very magical tonight on Disney as the Mickey Mouse channel presents Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie at 8 p.m. EST. The small-screen movie, shot in Puerto Rico, is an adventure story that boasts great special effects and tons of adventure and drama. Sixteen-year-old Alex Russo (Gomez) takes a Caribbean vacation with her family that is supposed to be the best trip of her life. But when her mother, Teresa (Maria Canals Barrera), forbids her from going on a date with a windsurfing instructor she fancies, a blazing-mad Alex wishes her parents had never met. Because she has magical powers, Alex's wish turns into an accidental spell that comes true, forcing her and her brother to try to find a way to reverse the spell before it's too late. Be careful what you wish for!

The idea for a Wizards movie came following great ratings for the hit TV series during its second season—it was ranked as the number two scripted series across all cable and broadcast networks among teens 9 to 14. And I'm sure the fact that Gomez is one of the new queens of TV movies had a lot to do with this movie getting the green light. This year alone, the Texan beauty has starred in three successful TV movies: Princess Protection Program (seen by 8.5 million total viewers, making it the third highest-rated Disney movie of all-time); Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana and ABC Family's A Cinderella Story (which pulled in 5.3 million viewers, making it the number one cable movie across all key demographics for the network). She also recorded six songs for the Wizards movie soundtrack.

Expect the Wizards movie to trump the success of Princess Protection Program and every other Disney TV movie this year!
